There are a lot of ways to consume cannabis, and they all feel pretty different. Here's a plain-language guide to help you pick what's right for you.
The dried bud of the cannabis plant. You smoke it in a pipe, bong, or rolled in paper. Old school for a reason: the effects come on fast, you can feel exactly how much you've had, and stopping is easy. Most flexible option for finding your dose.
Flower already rolled into a joint, ready to smoke. Same experience as flower but without needing to grind, roll, or own anything. A good way to try a new strain without buying a whole eighth.
Gummies, chocolates, mints, baked goods. Cannabis infused into food. Often the easiest entry point for new users since there's no smoke, no equipment, and the dose per piece is clearly labeled. The catch: it takes a while to kick in, and the effects last much longer than smoking.
Concentrated cannabis oil in either a refillable cartridge that screws onto a battery, or a single-use disposable pen. You inhale a vapor, not smoke, so there's almost no smell and no ash. Stronger than flower per puff, so go easy at first.
Sparkling waters, sodas, mocktails, tonics. Cannabis (usually low-dose) infused into a drink. Great for social settings where you'd otherwise have a beer or cocktail. Effects come on faster than edibles and wear off sooner, which most people find more manageable.
A small dropper bottle of cannabis-infused oil or alcohol. You put a few drops under your tongue and hold it there. Faster than edibles, easier to dose precisely than almost anything else, and totally smoke-free.
Lotions, balms, salves, and roll-ons you apply directly to your skin. Mostly used for sore muscles, joint pain, or skin issues. The big thing: standard topicals don't get you high, they just work locally on the spot you applied them.
Cannabis extracted into a much more potent form: wax, shatter, rosin, live resin, hash. Used with a dab rig or specialized vaporizer. Significantly stronger than flower, so this is generally not where new users should start. If you're curious, try a low-temp dab with someone experienced.
Recreational cannabis is legal in Minnesota for adults 21+. Here's what that actually means in your daily life so you don't accidentally end up explaining yourself to a cop in a Cub Foods parking lot.
Same as alcohol. Bring an ID. Yes, even if your beard says otherwise.
At home you can keep up to 2 pounds. That's a lot of flower. Pace yourself.
This one trips people up. Smoking and vaping cannabis in public is not legal — sidewalks, parks, parking lots, patios, the river path, your friend's wedding lawn. Treat it like cigarettes used to be: indoor private spaces, or licensed on-site consumption venues. Edibles in public are fine, but use common sense.
DWI laws apply to cannabis the same as alcohol. There's no "I'm a really good driver high" exception. If you're using, plan a ride. Lyft, friend, sleepover. Be the person other people can call too.
You can consume in your own home (and grow up to 8 plants — only 4 flowering at a time, in a locked space out of public view). Renting? Your landlord can prohibit smoking but generally not edibles. Check your lease.
Cannabis is still federally illegal, which means crossing state lines with it (even into Wisconsin) is a federal offense. Same goes for airports — even on a domestic flight, TSA can hand it over to local cops. Buy what you'll use, leave the rest.
Edibles look like candy because they basically are. Keep everything in original packaging, locked up, out of reach of children and pets. A 5mg gummy is a fun afternoon for you and a 911 call for a curious 4-year-old.
Legal doesn't mean welcome at your job. Most employers can still test, and cannabis stays in your system long after the effects are gone. Know your company's policy. Federal employees and DOT-regulated jobs (truckers, pilots) — totally off limits.
Plant, ritual, art, conversation, sleep, sex, music, breath, laughter. Here's how thoughtful people are building a culture around it that isn't just about getting high.
Cannabis has been part of contemplative traditions for thousands of years. A small dose can deepen meditation, expand body awareness, and quiet the inner chatter. Try a slow walk in the woods, a long stretch on the floor, or twenty minutes of just listening to your own breathing.
Make something. Draw, paint, write, build, cook, photograph, record. Cannabis can lower the bar between you and the blank page. The first idea doesn't have to be good — just start. Keep a notebook nearby.
Pass it around. Cannabis has always been a social plant. Host a dinner. Share a beverage with a friend after work. Replace the obligatory drinks-after-work with a gentler ritual. Just remember: not everyone consumes, and that's a feature, not a flaw.
Put on a record. Dance in your kitchen. Stretch. Take a yoga class. Cannabis has a long history with music, dance, and somatic practice. Let your body be the guide for once. Your phone can wait.
For some folks, cannabis helps step back from alcohol, sleep aids, or pain meds. It's not for everyone and not a cure-all — but it's a real option many people are exploring. If you're using cannabis as part of a bigger wellness picture, talk to a doctor who won't roll their eyes.
Legalization is overdue, and the people who paid the highest price for prohibition rarely got the apology. When you can, support BIPOC-owned dispensaries, locally-rooted craft growers, and tribal cannabis enterprises like Waabigwan Mashkiki and Native Nations. The plant is older than any of this.
For decades, cannabis was used as a tool to criminalize communities and pathologize personal choice. A lot of people you know still carry that conditioning — including, maybe, you. Being honest, responsible, and a little bit boring about it (the way we are about wine) is how we change the story. You don't owe anyone an explanation. And you don't have to apologize for not partaking, either.
